Drug Wars Strategy Guide

Most Drug Wars advice amounts to “buy low, sell high”, which you already knew. This guide uses the actual numbers the game runs on: what each borough does to prices, how wide each spread really is, and when a bigger coat pays for itself. If you have never played, start with the rules first.

The single biggest edge: where you stand

Every borough multiplies prices by a fixed amount. That multiplier does not change from day to day, which makes it the most reliable edge in the game. The Ghetto sells at 0.80x and Manhattan sells at 1.50x, so the same goods are worth almost twice as much across the map before a single random price swing is involved.

Buy in the Ghetto, sell in Manhattan or Central Park. That one habit outperforms most clever trading.

BoroughPricesRiskUse it for
Ghetto0.80xHighCheapest market in the city. This is where you buy.
Coney Island0.90xLowCheap and calm. A safer place to load up.
Staten Island0.95xLowestSlightly cheap and the safest borough on the map.
The Bronx1.00xLowYour starting turf. Baseline prices.
Queens1.00xLowSteady, unremarkable, rarely a mistake.
Brooklyn1.10xMediumA mild selling premium.
Central Park1.20xVery lowTourist prices with almost no risk. Excellent place to sell.
Manhattan1.50xMediumThe most expensive market. This is where you sell.

Note the trap: the Ghetto is the cheapest market and also the most dangerous one. Carrying your entire fortune in cash through it is how good runs end.

Which goods are actually worth trading

Each item has a base price range. The ratio between the low and high end tells you how much a good swing can pay, and availability tells you how often it shows up at all. Prices you see in game are this range adjusted by the borough multiplier and the day’s randomness.

ItemBase rangeSpreadStockedVerdict
Ludes$10 to $606.0xLowBest ratio in the game, but pennies per slot.
Acid$1,000 to $4,5004.5xMediumThe sweet spot for a mid-game bankroll.
Speed$70 to $2503.6xHighReliable early money while you are still poor.
Hash$450 to $1,5003.3xMediumSolid all-round trade.
Weed$300 to $9003.0xHighestAlmost always in stock. Dependable, never spectacular.
Heroin$5,000 to $14,0002.8xMediumBig money per slot once you can afford volume.
PCP$1,000 to $2,5002.5xLowOften missing from the market entirely.
Shrooms$600 to $1,3502.25xMediumMiddling on every axis.
Cocaine$15,000 to $30,0002.0xHighThe highest profit per slot in the game. The late game is cocaine.
Ecstasy$2,800 to $3,7001.3xMediumThe narrowest spread on the board. Usually the worst trade available.

Spread is not the same as profit

Ludes have the best ratio in the game at 6x, and they are close to worthless. Your coat holds a fixed number of units, so what actually matters is profit per slot, not profit per dollar.

  • A slot of Ludes can net you about $50 on a perfect trade.
  • A slot of Cocaine can net you about $15,000 on the same perfect trade.
  • Same slot. Three hundred times the money.

This is why the game has a natural arc. Early on you cannot afford Cocaine, so you grind Speed and Weed because they are cheap and almost always in stock. The moment you can fill a coat with the expensive goods, do it and never look back.

When to buy a bigger coat

Coat upgrades look expensive and are almost always underpriced. The first upgrade takes you from 100 to 200 units for $5,000. If you are netting even $150 a slot, those extra 100 slots return $15,000 on the very next good trade. It pays for itself three times over in one trip.

The rule: buy capacity as soon as you can afford it without skipping a buy. Players who hoard cash and keep a small coat are choosing to earn less on every remaining day. Capacity compounds, cash sitting idle does not.

The loan shark

You start $5,500 in debt and it accrues interest every day. On a 10 day run the interest is an annoyance. On a 100 day run, ignoring it is how you finish with a negative score.

  • Do not pay it on day one. That cash is worth more as inventory.
  • Do clear it as soon as one good trade can cover it without emptying your coat.
  • Never plan to pay it on the last day. Compounding does not care about your plan.
  • Use the bank once you are carrying real money. Muggers cannot take what you deposited.

A run that works

  1. Start in the Bronx. Buy whatever is flagged cheap, usually Speed or Weed.
  2. Travel to Manhattan or Central Park and sell into the multiplier.
  3. Take the first coat upgrade the moment you can afford it.
  4. Clear the loan shark on your first genuinely good trade.
  5. Settle into a Ghetto buy, Manhattan sell rhythm, banking profit as you go.
  6. Move up to Acid, then Heroin, then Cocaine as your bankroll allows.
  7. On the final day, sell everything. Inventory is worth nothing at the buzzer.

Try it on today’s market

The daily challenge gives every player the same market on the same day, so it is the honest way to test whether a strategy is actually better than someone else’s. Same prices, same events, same starting cash.
